In this course, you’ll learn how to access the harmonizing power of the nervous system through the lens of Polyvagal Theory and energy practices that have stood the test of time.
First proposed by Stephen Porges, PhD, in 1994, Polyvagal Theory provides an explanation for the effectiveness of various body-based trauma therapies by elucidating the role of the branches of the vagus nerve in how humans respond to, and heal from, trauma. As Dr. Porges puts it, it offers a way to “track trauma's impact on the nervous system to reduce symptoms and speed healing. And once you know how trauma impacts your patient's nervous system, you can adapt interventions to be faster and more effective.”
In combining Polyvagal Theory with ancient energetic and yogic practices, this course joins the Western physical approaches to healing the nervous system with the powerful Eastern yogic science and philosophy of the life force—breath, Prana, Chi, energy.
These therapeutic approaches use the natural ability of the nervous system to restore a sense of vitality, safety, balance, emotional regulation and social connection. They have also recently been introduced for use by first responders and mental health workers to support trauma patients.
The energy practices of mindfulness and yoga are now included in mainstream treatment programs that empower people to take care of their health and support recovery. In this course, gain a window into the skills you need, and develop your potential to serve individuals who need support in the areas of mental health, trauma and illness.
In this one day workshop we will:
- Discover and understand the Polyvagal Theory as a map of the nervous system through the latest research models of science, psychology and therapy.
- Explore the Polyvagal Theory's explanation of how trauma and many illnesses are experienced through the imbalance of the nervous system and how it informs the journey of integration and healing.
- Understand how energy (Prana, Shakti, Qi), as understood by Eastern yogic science, is essential to developing a healthy, well-functioning physical nervous system.
- Be introduced to the empowering practices of the Wim Hoff Method of breath work and the latest mind-body somatic practices for self-soothing and emotional regulation.
